Karen was an amazing person who made a positive impact on most everyone she met. People (and animals) didn't just like Karen, they LOVED her

Karen was an extraordinarily loved partner, daughter, daughter in law, sister, friend, family member, colleague and Mam to Jaffa the Poodle.

Karen passed away peacefully in February 2024, nearly 2 years after her diagnosis of advanced ovarian cancer. Her Mum suggested she go for a walk on the beach with Jaffa the poodle and off they went together.

Karen received exemplary care from many NHS staff during her cancer journey but when treatment was no longer an option she opted to spend her last days in the Marie Curie Hospice in Newcastle. The care she and her loved ones received there was remarkable.

Karen was naturally a shy and private person. We have thought about whether she would have liked us to put her in the spotlight and raise funds in this way. However, she was so people focussed and the professionalism, compassion and care she and her family and friends have received from the Marie Curie hospice was so wonderful: a comfort in the hardest of times, that we know she would approve.

In line with her no fuss, not being the centre of attention approach, Karen asked that there be no funeral. She wanted people to remember her in a way that was right for them. This could be while having a walk on the beach or in woods, having a cup of tea in your garden or allotment, eating a pizza, downing several pints, dancing the night away, or all of the above. Similarly no cards or flowers.

It can be hard to know how to grieve someone without the usual rites of passage. You could view this as an opportunity to donate the cost of a bunch of flowers or even the travel expenses to the funeral. Any amount large or small will be put to very good use by Marie Curie.

Finally, Karen Thorne, you are a huge and irreplaceable loss to those who loved you. Thank you.
